Welcome to the Burke Centre Swim Club

Stingers team website

Penguin team website

The Burke Centre Swim Club (BCSC) is comprised of two teams; the Burke Centre Penguins and the Burke Centre Stingers.  Each team has approximately 225 swimmers.  Neither team has a dive team.  Both teams are considered equal (there is no “A” or “B” team).  The Penguins & the Stingers exist under a single charter, but they operate completely independently with individual team presidents and boards.  The Burke Centre Conservancy maintains five pools throughout the Burke community.  The home pool for the Penguins is the Landings pool.  The home pool for the Stingers is the Ponds pool.  Visit both teams' websites (at right) to learn more.  When you register to swim, you may request a particular team.  Once swimmers are assigned to a team, they remain on that team.  Every effort is made to honor requests, but understand that the club attempts to balance the total swimmers, age-groups, and abilities of both teams.  For this reason, it may be necessary, on occasion, to move a swimmer to a particular team.  To keep the teams balanced, changing teams, after you have been assigned, is not permitted.  The Burke Centre Swim Club participates in the Colonial Swimming League (CSL) http://csl.nvblu.com/plasma/core/site/csl

Registration process for
the Burke Centre Swim Club

Please read the information below before proceeding with your online registration.

Registration for the Burke Centre Swim Club (both Penguins and Stingers) is done online.  Plan to register EARLY   To maintain safe swimming conditions, both Penguin & Stinger swim teams will be capped this year.  In addition, specific age-groups may be closed if numbers within the group become unmanageable.  Online registration for returning team members begins on 15 March 2012.  Online registration for NEW swimmers begins on 1 April 2012.  Registration will close on 1 June 2012.  Registration will continue until that date unless team numbers become too difficult to safely manage.  For that reason, families are urged to register early.  The cost of registration is $105 per swimmer for the first two swimmers and $80 for each additional swimmer. Registrations completed after 30 April 2012 will automatically be charged a $30 late fee (per family).  Once registration is closed, a wait list will be started.  Preference on the wait list will be given to Burke Centre residents and returning swimmer families.

Refund policy:  Swimmers that do not pass the evaluation may practice (independently) and retest to join the team*.  Swimmers who do not pass, and choose not to retest, will receive a full refund.  Swimmers may withdraw from the team (for a refund) through Friday, 22 June 2012.  Requests must be in writing (email is fine) to the respective team president (Penguin President ~ Mary Mulvenon; Stinger President ~ Jeff Beima).   If a swimmer withdraws from the team (prior to that date) for a reason not related to the swimmer evaluation, they will be refunded the registration fee minus a $10 non-refundable processing fee.  No refunds are issued if a swimmer chooses to withdraw after that date.

NOTE:  If a swimmer has swum competitively in the past, they will be asked to provide their best times as part of the online registration.  Please have that information available before beginning the online registration process. Be reminded that swimmers must also be members of the Burke Centre pools to participate on the swim team. Go to Burke Centre Pool Membership Applications, Pool Locations, & Pool Rules for pool membership information.

Information for families new to the Burke Centre Swim Club

ALL swimmers new to the BCSC (age 10 & younger), including any siblings that have not participated before, must attend the new swimmer Evaluation Day on Tuesday, 29 May 2012.  New Penguin swimmers will be evaluated at the Landings pool (from 4:00pm-6:45pm); new Stinger swimmers will be evaluated at the Commons pool (from 4:30pm-7:30pm); swimmers may come anytime during that window.  To participate on the swim team, the BCSC requires that swimmers meet the Red Cross Level III performance criteria which essentially requires swimmers to swim 15 yds (front & back) and float & tread water for ~30 seconds.  Swimmers do not need to know all competitive strokes.  New swimmers that register after the evaluation day will be assigned to a team and evaluated at the first team practice attended.  *Team rosters are due to the CSL by the second dual meet in the season.  Swimmers that do not pass the evaluation may practice (independently) and retest up until that date.

Families who have not swum for either team will be assigned to either the Penguins or Stingers team at the draft meeting held in mid-May.  As explained above, efforts will be made to honor requests, but preferences are NOT guaranteed. After the draft, families will be notified of their team assignment prior to each team's parent meetings toward the end of May.  Applicants who register after the draft will be assigned to a team based on team preference and/or team availabilities.  New swimmers that register after the evaluation day, will be assigned to a team and will be evaluated at the first team practice attended.
Parents are encouraged to attend their team’s parent meeting prior to the start of the summer season.  Important practice time and meet schedules will be distributed; and coaches will be there to discuss their plans for the season and answer any questions you may have.  Both Penguin & Stinger parent meetings will be held at 7:30pm at the Commons Community Center.  The Penguin parent meeting will be Monday, 21 May 2012 and the Stinger parent meeting will be on Wednesday, 23 May 2012.

Volunteer FEE - BCSC volunteer fee detailed explanation!
Summary:  For the 2012 season, the BCSC is imposing a mandatory volunteer requirement.  All BCSC families must work 6 - 8 jobs (3 - 4 must be meet related) during the swim season for their respective team or pay a volunteer fee of $125.  Families have two options to choose from for the fee:

1.  As part of the online registration, your family can opt-out of the requirement and pay the $125 as part of your registration fee.
     OR
2.  If you family wishes to fulfill the volunteer requirement, you must submit a check for $125 payable to the Burke Centre Swim Club to the team volunteer coordinator by Friday, June 8th (tables will be set up at practice beginning on May 30th for family's to submit a check).  The $125 check will be held as a "security deposit" and will be returned to you once your family has met the volunteer requirement.  Checks will only be cashed if volunteer requirements are not met by the end of the season party on July 29, 2012.  You do not need to submit a check if you already paid the $125 fee during registration.
